The Various Methods of Preparing for the FE Exam

Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is essential for engineers aspiring to earn their Professional Engineering (PE) licensure. There are different methods by which you can prepare for the FE exam but are you wondering, 'What is the best prep method?' Read this article to find out the answer.

FE Exam Overview

Before we delve deep into the preparation methods, it is vital to know a few basic things about the FE exam.

  • Who Can Take Up the FE Exam?

Students in their senior year of an EIC/ABET-accredited undergrad engineering program or recent graduates can appear for the FE exam.

  • FE Exam Format
The FE exam is a computer-based test (CBT) that can be taken year-round at NCEES approved Pearson VUE test centers.

The FE exam is 6-hours long and comprises 110 multiple-choice questions. You will have 5 hours and 20 minutes to solve these questions, and there is a scheduled break for 25 minutes.

Once you have passed the FE exam, your state board will grant you an official designation as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or an Engineer Intern (EI).

Different Methods of Preparation

  • Self-study
Self-study usually works for people who are working and have a tight schedule. There are several books available on the market that can help you prepare for the FE exam. People often end up wasting their money on poor guidebooks that do not cover the entire syllabus. So, hit the internet and browse various blogs or discussion forums to find the best reference materials. You can also visit libraries and access engineering handbooks that can help you prepare for the exam.
  • Group Study
If you are taking up the exam with your friends or co-workers, group study can be a feasible option. You may be weak in a subject area, but your study mate may be adept in that subject. So, collaborating allows you to bounce ideas off each other and share solutions to complex problems.
  • Review Course
Enrolling in a FE Exam Prep Course is a great way to prepare for the exam. Popular platforms like School of PE offer comprehensive review courses and interactive lectures with expert tutors who can help you understand complex concepts and clarify your doubts.

If you have a cramped work schedule and cannot attend live classes, opt for Ondemand courses and access recorded video lectures whenever you see fit on any device with an internet connection.

A good FE review course comes with several benefits, such as course notes, practice problems, calculator training, and discussion forum access.

What is the Best Prep Method?

If you are running low on cash, you can opt for self-study mode. You can start preparing by purchasing reference manuals or borrow them from your friends who recently took up the FE exam. However, studying on your own can be difficult, and you run the risk of failing the exam.

On the other hand, signing up for a FE Exam Prep Course has its advantages and significantly improves your chances of passing the exam. The review courses do not cost an arm and a leg and are a worthy investment.

So, make up your mind and start preparing for the FE exam.

Thoughts on the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

It's over!! I passed the FE exam in a single attempt!!

I’m officially an “Engineer-in-Training” now!

In this article, I'm sharing my experience and thoughts on the FE exam. Read on to know more about the exam and some tips that helped me ace the exam.

FE Exam Overview

Before sharing my thoughts on the exam, let me give you an overview of the FE exam.

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first step on the path of getting your professional engineering licensure. Students in their senior year of college and recent graduates can take the FE exam.

The FE is a 6-hour long computer-based test (CBT) and includes an 8-minute tutorial, a 25-minute break, and a short survey at the end of the exam. The exam has 110 multiple-choice questions, and you will have 5 hours 20 minutes to solve these questions.

The FE exam is offered in seven disciplines, namely:

  • FE Chemical
  • FE Civil
  • FE Electrical and Computer
  • FE Environmental
  • FE Industrial and Systems
  • FE Mechanical
  • FE Other Disciplines

You can opt for the FE Other Disciplines exam if you are undecided on which engineering discipline to focus your career on.

Is the FE Exam Difficult?

It is not too hard if you prepare thoroughly. I took the exam a year after graduation and felt that the questions were manageable. However, it is important to take the exam in your final year of college or soon after graduation. If many years have passed since your undergrad, you will be out of touch with the basic engineering concepts, and it will be much harder to pass the exam.

How I passed the FE exam

Here's how I passed the FE exam on my first attempt:

Prep Time: I took the exam seriously and spent 3-months preparing for the exam. I have seen people claiming that they passed the exam after 3-4 days of prep. Don't fall for that. Form a solid study schedule and adhere to it.

The NCEES FE Reference Handbook is the only reference material you can use during the exam. So, familiarize yourself with the FE Reference Handbook. You can purchase the hard copy or download the book in PDF format for free.

Take a FE exam review course: I enrolled in School of PE's FE review course, and it was worth every penny. You can interact with their expert instructors and clarify your doubts. Overall, I had a good experience with School of PE.

Practice makes perfect: Purchase NCEES practice exams as they are the closest thing to the actual exam. Take up practice tests and grade them to identify your areas of expertise and topics you need to spend more time reviewing. When the exam date was approaching, I spent a week taking up practice exams.

Time is of the essence: On average, you have 2 minutes 54 seconds to solve each question. So, solve many practice problems to enhance your problem-solving skills and calculation speed.

Concluding Thoughts

Obtaining a PE license is a tremendous achievement in an engineer's life. It can open up an array of high-paying employment opportunities. Take the first step towards getting your PE licensure by preparing for the FE exam. Take the FE exam seriously and enroll in a review course to improve your odds of passing the FE exam.
