How to Prepare for FE Exam for Electrical Engineering?

How to prepare for the FE exam for Electrical Engineering? It is a common question among candidates who aspire to earn their Professional Engineer Licensure. Read on for some tips that can help ease up your FE Electrical Engineering preparation process.

FE Electrical Engineering Exam - Overview

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Electrical exam is the first step in getting your PE licensure in Electrical. It is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) to evaluate and assess the technical competency of a candidate. The FE exam consists of 110 questions, and these questions can be in the form of multiple-choice questions, fill in the blanks, selecting a point in the graph, and so on.

It is a timed test; candidates must complete the test within 5 hours 20 minutes, which means you have approximately 3 minutes to solve each question. To solve the questions within the time limit, you can break down the evaluation process into sequential steps as follows:

  •   Read and understand the question
  •   Review the given options (in case of multiple-choice questions)
  •  Think about the solution
  •   Identify the right equation/concept
  •   Perform calculations
  •  Choose the correct answer from the given options

FE Electrical Engineering Exam - Preparation Tips

You can ace the FE Electrical exam by preparing well in advance and studying using recommended books and reference materials. To make the entire preparation and study process easy for you and to pass the exam, here are few preparation tips:

  •          The ideal time to prepare for this exam is your last semester of the engineering course or soon after graduation. Everything you have studied would still be fresh, and it will ease your preparation process for the FE exam.
  •          Start your preparation early, say 3-4 months before the exam. Giving yourself a head start will help you study each topic thoroughly.
  •          Make the best out of the NCEES Reference Handbook; review all the formulae in the Handbook and memorize everything else that is not there in the Handbook. The NCEES Reference Handbook is a powerful tool to prepare for the FE Electrical Engineering exam.
  •          Do not be picky while preparing for the exam; cover all the concepts. Focus on your strengths and concentrate more on your weaknesses. Brush up on all the concepts related to FE Electrical Engineering and do not sleep on Ethics and Law.
  •          To boost your preparation process, register yourself with a professional FE online course provider. You will gain the necessary skills to solve problems in the exam within the time limit.

Practice and solve problems as much as possible. It will boost your confidence to take up the real FE exam and help avoid exam jitters. Practice exams will help you establish your readiness and boost your confidence to take up the exam.

Also, spend a week taking the NCEES practice exam, as it is the closest thing to the actual FE exam. NCEES practice tests will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses before you take up the final exam.

If you want to succeed in your first attempt, register with an online review course. In my case, School of PE's Live Online review classes came in handy to ace the FE exam in my first attempt.

Good luck with the exam!
